Rededication of the Emmett Till memorial sign
Emmett Till's cousin gather at Graball Landing for the rededication of the shot up sign. Pictured are Airicka Gordon-Taylor and her mother Ollie Gordon, Gordon is the Executive Director of the Mamie TillMobley Foundation, and Rev. Wheeler Parker Jr. who was with Emmett on hte trsin ride to Mississippi,. Wheeler was also with Emmeett at Bryants Grocery and when he was abducted and then murdered. As Patrick Weeems, Executive Director of the Emmett Intrepretive Center said," Mississippi did not put this uo a resillient and committed group of black and white local citizens in the poorest county in Mississippi put this historic marker back up. Yes the vandalism is awful but the resolve to continue telling the truth is the story." The sign had been vandalized 4 times and now is bulletproof.
The answer to why, they chose to walk the bullet ridden sign to the Confederate statue on Ole Miss Campus... Some video of the bullet ridden Emmett Till memorial sign from the river site, being walked on to the Ole Miss campus to in front of the Confederate statute by the Grove Friday night October 18,2019, on the eve of the rededication of a new bullet proof sign at Graball Landing. The Young men with sign are students at the University of Mississippi aka Ole Miss Tyler Yarbrough and Curtis Hill both students were part of a symposium earlier on campus as part of the Remembering Emmett Till event.
